Sojourner Truth (1797–1883) Born Isabella Baumfree, she escaped slavery in 1826 and, following a spiritual calling, renamed herself Sojourner Truth in 1843 and set out to "go and testify the hope within her." She became an itinerant preacher whose eloquent words moved audiences across the nation advocating for abolition, women’s rights, and temperance. Her courage, conviction, and lifelong pursuit of justice left an enduring legacy as one of America’s most transformative voices for human rights.
