A Bouquet Of Gestures - Red Square Series (Medium)
Quarantine gave rise to the Red Squares series, which has been a way to undermine and lean into the hauntology of monotonous living, while simultaneously building a lexicon of red (an under-explored pigment). In each image, the goal being to find ways to make anew within yesterday’s constraints. Each piece was made during the months of December 2020 and January 2021, the time straddling the winter equinox when days were shortest. The artist, working amid immense depression would commission a painting-a-day, sometimes more, from themselves. The process began with an appreciation for the textures these base materials such as construction paper and crayon or color sticks could make. Beginning with these elements the artist was able to work from bed.
